One Song: A Collaborative Spotify Playlist

I had an idea for a playlist. What if we made one that contained the one song that we most want to share with others. This isn't necessarily your favorite or the most popular song, but one you feel compelled to share. A song that everyone should hear at least once. The song that you go back to during emotional times. That song.

I am not sure, but I suspect you have to have a Spotify account to add a song to the playlist. If so you can probably do the free account. Let me know in the comments if you can't along with your song choice and I will add it myself if necessary.

If you would like, feel free to share why you chose your song in the comments below. I picked The Smiths 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want' because the song haunts me. I can often identify the yearning to have the freedom to do what I want without the need to examine how it will affect my family.

Here is the link to the playlist, below is the playlist. I hope it soon has more than one song.

  1. I would pick Till I Collapse by Eminem. Too often, autism wears me down. That song helps remind to keep going. It helps me stay focused on God's Purpose for me to help people.

  2. I added the Billie Holiday's version of "Summertime." It always reminds me to joyful for the things that I have and the time I get to spend with loved ones. It picks me up when I'm down and takes me to a happy place. I think everyone should hear Billie sing it at least once :-)

  3. I added a Jamiroquai track from his first album. It reminds me of my last year in college. The Acid Jazz label back then was refreshing and hinted at a brighter future.

  5. Great idea! I love Spotify playlists.

I added: Bob Schneider - 40 Dogs -- It's one of my favorite songs for the summer. The guy is an Austin, Texas legend. The 40 dogs refer to my favorite beverage of choice 40 ouncers of beer in my mind. I knew you would appreciate that, Will.

  6. I was going with Lose Yourself by Eminem but I see you already have an Eminem song so for the sake of diversity I will go in the complete opposite direction. Vienna by Billy Joel, a nice reminder to slow down.

  7. One song. Has to be This is the Moment by Colm Wilkinson (my true hero) from the concept album of a musical that ultimately didn't go anywhere. This song is best played after you've had a great day- and then it makes your day like 10 times better. Play it on days like:

    Wedding days (namely yours)
    Births of children
    Got new job
    Made some students day.
Made a difference in other people's lives.

For more Colm, listen to this (not on Spotify): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4omWMMibRuE

Funny- I just listed to all of Billy Joel's greatest hits today! Didn't make my list- though I like Vienna. My fav would have to be "The Entertainer" cause I like him trashing the music business in that song.

My Life's Anthem is "Minor Threat" by Minor Threat
Anger is a powerful change agent and seeing how people, kids, adults are treated makes me angry at times. The way people discount kids because they are kids. The way people discount a single teacher's voice because they are "that crazy teacher." I get mad at myself even. To me anger pushes action more than sadness does.

Lastly I love the lines "I might be an adult, but I'm a minor at heart." (So important to keep your inner child going) and that closing line said with a laugh: "That's a promise." The promise made is that we/I are/am never going to stop trying to make things right.

PS- There are two F bombs in the song, so feel free to skip it or make sure your kids aren't listening.

    1. Thanks for the add, this isn't the first explicit song in the list. Raw emotional songs, especially those that move us will often have language that might be inappropriate at less stressful times.

  9. One for the money, two for the show....

Please add the song to the playlist for me.

It's Superman, by REM. And it's amazing. Its one of the songs, if not the only song, by REM that it not sung by Michael Stipe. And no, I am not suggesting it be added because it is some novelty - the lyrics are fantastics, the concepts an ideas are admirable, and the message is the kind of reminder we need to hear in our daily lives, well, daily. It also helps that the song is, you know, catchy. I'm hoping that it becomes one of those timeless pieces, and I'm raising my own kids listening to it in the hopes that my grandkids will hear it often, too - for the quality of the song, its appropriateness as a reflection of this era, and the importance of the message.

  10. I LOVE this! I have not used spotify, signed in w/ FB but not having any luck! Please add "Feed The Birds, Tuppence A Bag." Since #EdCampMagic, I've been on the #MyDisneyClass bandwagon and loving the ride! I read recently that this song was considered by most Disney historians to be Walt Disney's favorite song. To say it was Disney's favorite speaks volumes to me! That alone gave me such insight into his character! "The song nails the theme of the picture [Mary Poppins]. It doesn’t take much to do an act of kindness…in this case a tuppence, just a penny or two. Those small things, the little acts…make all the difference." - @DixonOnDisney I truly believe kindness matters, and I can really relate to Disney's affection of "Feed The Birds." Read more about why "Walt Disney Loved The Song" here http://www.keytothekingdombook.com/wordpress/2012/02/walt-disney-loved-the-song/ I hope everyone listens to this song, and commits to doing one act of kindness in their day! Maybe even "feed the birds." (Something I'm also passionate about, but that's a whole other story!) - @TParks

    2. Again a reminder, "Please Don't Judge." :) I picked this song because this is the song I choose to sing when I am alone in the car, out on country roads, with all the widows rolled down, singing it as loud as I possibly can. It's the song I turn to when things aren't working out quite the way I want them to work out. It's the song that helps remind me that for the most part, things tend to work out in life, in my life it sometimes it just takes a little longer than I would like it to take. More and more I understand that "Taking the Long Way," just makes you grow that much more as a person. It makes you appreciate where you are and who you are as a person that much more. I am most certainly feeling that way with my new job I am starting this fall. So looking forward to it! Thanks for letting me be a part of this, what a great idea!

  12. I just added "Present Tense" by Pearl Jam from the No Code album (1996). I've been a PJ fan for years and every time it comes on PJ Radio on XM I crank it up! Eddie's vocals are haunting, The lyrics are poignant. The tune is rhythmic and dynamic. I simply LOVE this song.

  13. I want to add Raw Power by The Stooges. The Stooges are the godfathers of punk rock and Iggy is an institution and an inspiration. No one brings it harder than Iggy Pop does. He's a force of nature.

  17. I mulled over this for a couple of days and didn't really explain myself at the time, Will and I have known each other online for a while - about seven or eight years. I dont have a huge online profile, I don't tend to put myself out there so much, but I figured this one time I might add some detail for my old friend.

The Song 'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' came out in New Zealand in 1982. I was nine at the time and can't really remember it, it always was around, as you do, I think you draw stuff from your personal experience and then overlay the music to fit. The songs about, well I've always interpreted it to be about living in New Zealand and adventuring towards the rest of the world, which I have applied in a sense to my blogging. Its not really reflective of my full musical tastes. Joy Division and some of the other tracks mentioned would be more of my thing, was always my thing but since my son was diagnosed with a terminal illness Im not really into listening to music thats too emotive or down (The Eternal, thinking about it makes me shake) because it tends to take me to a place and thats not a great thing. However I think that music as a force and as a positive force does make a difference. Sorry if this has ended up a bit deep Will.
